Hutchison outsources security to Verizon Business

Verizon Business has been awarded a three-year contract to provide managed security services (MSS) for Hutchison Australia's 3G wireless network.

Hutchison's general manager of commercial governance, Bill Millar, said the telco recently deployed an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) across its network and went to market seeking security specialists to add to its existing levels of network protection.

Verizon Business, which last month acquired Cybertrust, will provide an on-site security specialist, 24-hour monitoring from its Asia Pacific Security Operations Centre in Canberra, and full integration into the Verizon Business Global MSS network.

This includes round-the-clock monitoring and management for 3's firewall devices and recently deployed IDS.

Millar said Verizon Business was selected for its global resources, competitive pricing and willingness to customise its managed security service delivery to meet the telco's needs.

Verizon's Asia Pacific regional vice president for security solutiions, Paul O'Rourke, said as customers such as Hutchison begin to take up managed security solutions more widely, they are proactively seeking out providers with global capabilities, best practice processes, best-of-breed technology and highly skilled security practitioners.

The Hutchison deal is the first local managed security services contract announced by Verizon Business since it acquired Cybertrust.

Ovum analyst, Jan Dawson, said the acquisition is important because Verizon and other telecom providers have lagged behind rival AT&T in security offerings.

"Although all the major providers have actively pursued the security opportunity, none has been able to tell as convincing a story, especially around network-based security, as AT&T," Dawson said. "This acquisition catapults Verizon Business into a much stronger position on security."
