As part of its new unified communications strategy, NEC has revamped its range of IP and digital desk phones and added the ability for devices to be taken apart and different modules added.

NEC is touting the new DT handset range, with its modular design, as ideal for businesses which may need the option to customize the terminals to meet an employee's specific communications needs.

For example, the cover the of entry-level IP phone can be removed and replaced with 24 buttons if required.

NEC Australia's UC business manager, Steve Woff, said the modular design will also cater for technology enhancements that become available in the future.

Woff said support for open XML also allows businesses to push applications to the phone.

The DT700 series are available now are IP-only with the dual TDM-IP DT300 series handsets on the way.

Some handsets will support Bluetooth for wireless calling and the software can be upgraded to support IPv6.

Negative Review

This phone has the worst user interface of any device I have ever seen or used.
Don't get me wrong, it looks great, but whomever designed the functionality behind each button on it's fancy keypad has no comprehension whatsoever for human factors and usability.
