IT jobs slump 5% in May: Olivier

IT jobs continued to further slide in May, falling by 5 per cent, leading to a total fall of 58.11 per cent for the 12 month period, according to statistics from the Olivier Job Index.

The slump was felt right across the Australian job marketplace, with overall job ads falling by 4 per cent in May and 52 per cent for the 12 month period.

Olivier Group director, Robert Olivier, says there are mixed messages this month with some psychological comfort from 'green shoots'.

“The decline is less than previous months, and that fits with the other positive economic messages we've been hearing,” Olivier said.

South Australia suffered the greatest fall in IT jobs (29.6%), followed by Queensland (14.7%).

The greatest number of IT job ads was for software development & engineering roles, with around 5,000 ads, but this figure is down from 12,000 ads in May 2008.

Job ads rose during the month, with 16,850 jobs added, which Olivier attributes to the federal budget.

“It may be that businesses got a better budget result than expected.”

While full time jobs fell 4.4 per cent in the month, part-time and contract positions were up 5.3 and 5.9 per cent respectively.

“Employers may be coming back into the market, wanting people, but not yet confident enough to add to their head count,” Olivier said.
