Local software company, Once Technologies, has released the next generation of once:radix, an open source, Web-based application development environment that promises significant performance improvements and paves the way for load balancing of applications across mutliple servers.
Once:radix 1.5 is built on several open source projects, including PostgreSQL 8.4, Java 1.6, Tomcat 6 and JasperReports 3.5. It's Web interface is now certified for Firefox 3.5.
The release comes on the second anniversary of the launch of once:radix, which Once Technologies clamed to be first browser-based rapid application development system.
Once:radix allows organisations to create database-driven Web applications with limited expertise in the underlying technologies. It was first released as an open source project two years ago.
Once Technologies managing director, Rob Napier, said the 1.5 relases has a lot of “under-the-hood improvements” and the company is preparing the product to support much larger deployments with clustering.
“We are currently in discussion with distributed database vendors with the aim of selecting a technology to support thousands of users,” Napier said.
“A developer can build a system using once:radix to run on a laptop [and] they can take that same deployment and install it on a large distributed network. They can set it up in a SaaS environment or perhaps for a franchise group that has shared requirements, but complete separation of data between businesses. That comes as standard.”
Other feature enhancements include a simpler lock-unlock mechanism for editing records, faster drill downs, full integration of the help system, support for JasperReports 3.5 and i-Report 3.5 and an easier installation process.
According to Napier, once:radix 1.5 also helps the company prepare for the release of Once Technologies' flagship application, once:fabrik, as an open source project in September this year.
Once:fabrik is built with the once:radix platform and offers a suite of business management applications – from project management to timesheets and invoicing.
Once:radix 1.5 can be downloaded from SourceForge.net.
