Google has started pushing out an update for the Nexus One that will fix a 3G connectivity problem that has plagued some users and adds limited support for multitouch.
After receiving over 1,500 messages in a support forum from people complaining about trouble connecting to 3G, Google said last week that it had identified the problem and would soon deliver a fix.
On Tuesday, it posted a message on its Nexus One news and updates page announcing that it had started delivering the software update.
In addition to fixing the 3G problem, the update adds the first applications to support multitouch. The phone’s browser, gallery and maps applications will now support pinch-to-zoom functionality. The gallery is the photo application on the phone.
"Nexus One devices now include pinch-to-zoom, which is one specific implementation in the [user interface] that uses multi-touch," Google spokeswoman Carolyn Penner said.
While the recent versions of the Android OS include multitouch capability, no phone in the U.S. has yet to support it. When Google launched the Nexus One, it said that it would consider adding multitouch capabilities in the future.
The update also adds the Google Goggles application to the Nexus One. Google Goggles lets people take a photograph of an object, for instance a book cover, and search for it online.
Google is also pushing out an update to Google Maps that includes a night mode that makes the screen easier to view at night.
Google said that the update may take until the end of the week to reach all Nexus One users.
