My School passes test, graduates to My Uni

The Federal Government will extend its My Schools website to cover universities, in a move welcomed by the National Union of Students.

Speaking at the Universities Australia conference in Canberra yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the site will be completed by 2012 and will measure universities based on courses, quality of teaching, learning outcomes and campus facilities.

“We want students to make their decisions about where they want to study on the basis of robust information about the quality of education provided at each institution, rather than on hearsay, inference from entry requirements, or prestige,” Gillard said.

“Information will be provided in an easily accessible form for students and parents, universities will be able to learn from the success of their colleagues and the learning outcomes and the quality of teaching of our universities will become better known in the general community.”

Unlike the My Schools website which received a barrage of criticism from unions, the new project has been welcomed by university students.

Student union president, Carla Drakeford, said the comparison table is badly needed and she hoped that student experience would be included in the rating system.

The My School web site includes information on more than 10,000 schools including the number of students and teachers, attendance rates and the school's social-economic profile.
