Telstra has announced it will launch its second Android-powered mobile handset in as many months with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone to be available in May.

The news comes less than a month after the telco announced it will launch the HTC Desire smartphone on April 27.

Available for $0 upfront on the $110 per month Ultimate and $99 per month cap plans, the Xperia X10 is aimed at the premium end of the market. The Ultimate plan includes 150MB of data per month.

The phone will be available from Telstra stores and dealers from May 4 and can be purchased outright for $1099.

Telstra executive director for mobility products Ross Fielding said Telstra customers will be able to personalise the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 by selecting from thousands of free and paid-for applications available from the Android Market.

“A piano black finish, metal highlights and a stunning 4-inch screen make the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 one of the most distinctive looking smartphones available,” Fielding said.

Telstra has developed Android applications for services, including Mobile Foxtel, Whereis Navigator and Yellow Pages Mobile, which will be available for the X10.

The X10 features Timescape, an application that integrates messages -- SMS, e-mail, Facebook and Twitter -- into one view, and Mediascape a media content browser.

“Integration with the BigPond Music service lets customers view and purchase associated songs from inside the app,” Fielding said.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 runs Android 1.6 (upgradeable to Android 2.1) and features a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 4-inch touchscreen, 8.1 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack and a micro USB port.

It weighs 135 grams and comes bundled with an 8GB microSD card.
