Local iPad launch delayed

Australians will have to wait until the end of May to get an iPad after Apple today delayed the international launch of the device by one month.

The company said it cannot keep up within US demand, with 500,000 sold in the first week of launch.

Apple Asia spokeswoman Fiona Martin said the company will take Australian iPad pre-orders on May 10.

“Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad,” Martin said in a written statement.

“We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news.

“Demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks.”

The delay lends support to rumours that Apple did not manufacturer enough iPads at launch to meet demand. The company denied the allegations, however, iPad supplier Foxconn Electronics revealed it would ship about 700,000 devices during March and one million in April.
