Telstra Corporation Ltd chief executive David Thodey says Australia's biggest telecommunications provider is in deep discussions with NBN Co, the company set up to build the government's broadband network.

"We are involved in very deep discussions with the NBN," Mr Thodey said in an address to the Trans-Tasman Business Circle on Wednesday.

Mr Thodey added that Telstra's decision would be a purely commercial decision.

"If we can get a good outcome we'd be delighted," he said. "If we can't, we can't, and life will go on."

Mr Thodey said the past 12 months, the time in which he has been CEO, had been challenging, but he remained optimistic about the future.

"We remain optimistic about future opportunities," he said.

Mr Thodey said he had repeatedly said that the best outcome for both Telstra and NBN Co would be a collaborative agreement.

He added that either way, Telstra would aim to serve its customers.

"Irrespective of what happens, we will be able to serve our customer's needs."
