Samsung shows USB-powered monitor

Samsung has demonstrated a world first at a display conference in the US - a computer monitor that's powered solely via USB.
On show at the SID 2010 show in Washington, the USB-powered monitor is an 18.5in model that's not due to hit the market until next year. But it's a breakthrough which demonstrates the possibility for low-power monitors that connect directly to a PC or laptop and operate without the need for a mains adaptor. It achieves that with extreme energy efficiency, according to tech website Tech-On.
Equipped with an edge-lit LED backlight, the monitor achieves a transmittance of around 7 percent and has a peak power consumption of just 6.3W. The monitor runs off a twin USB cable which splits the power draw over a pair of ports.
Other than the low power consumption, the prototype on show at SID 2010 featured a 1,366 x 768 resolution, 250cd/m2 brightness, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
