VMware, Novell team up on SUSE Linux

Standard server appliance aims to simplify deployments

VMware and Novell have expanded their partnership with an agreement that will see VMware distribute and support SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and standardise its virtual appliance-based product offerings on the operating system.

Under the new deal customers deploying SLES for VMware in vSphere virtual machines will receive a subscription to SLES, including updates, as part of a qualifying vSphere license and support subscription.

VMware will also use its partner network to offer technical support for SLES and both companies will provide customers with the ability to port SLES workloads across clouds.

Senior vice president and general manager of virtualisation and cloud platforms at VMware, Raghu Raghuram, said the agreement will allow customers to virtualise Linux applications more easily accelerate their evolution to a fully virtualised datacenter.

Novell general manager of global alliances, Joe Wagner, said the partnership gives VMware and Novell customers a simplified way to virtualise and manage their IT environments.

“It gives our partners exciting new solutions with which to modernise their customers' IT environments and deliver significant ROI,” Wagner said. “This agreement is also a strong validation of Novell's intelligent workload management strategy.”

Some VMware products are already distributed and deployed as virtual appliances but standardising these on SLES will simplify the deployment and ongoing management of these solutions, according to VMware.
