Well regarded Sydney-based IT industry analyst, Phil Hassey, has announced being made redundant as vice president of Springboard Research on Twitter and other social networking portals.
On Wednesday this week Hassey tweeted: “Unfortunately due to financial circumstances at Springboard Research out of my control, I need to finish up at Springboard.”
He then followed that up with two more tweets.
“I have a couple of weeks left there. It was a complete shock, but the family and I will emerge stronger from it,” Hassey wrote.
“I will let people know what I am going to do moving forward. I appreciate any suggestions and comments.”
Hassey also posted the news of his redundancy to Facebook and LinkedIn.
In a telephone interview today, Hassey said while it wasn’t his decision to leave, he is determined to make it as amicable as possible.
“There was no impropriety on my part,” he said.
Hassey was the only person in Australia to be made redundant and could not comment whether more redundancies occurred across the organisation globally.
Springboard recently hired Hydrasight co-founder and ex-Meta analyst, John Brand, for its Melbourne operations.
Prior to Springboard, Hassey headed up IDC's services research across the Asia Pacific region.
On the decision to use Twitter, Hassey said it is a tool to “get to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible”.
“I know a lot of people in the industry and have a lot of contacts in the industry,’ he said. “It’s a sign of the times and an integrated way to communicate with people.”
Hassey has some plans, but is “not 100 per cent sure what they will be”.
“I expect I will stay in the industry. There are still a lot of career opportunities in IT analyst firms,” he said.
“You just have to be aware that it’s not always easy as there is a lot of change.”
