Check Point bolsters VMware security

Check Point's Security Gateway software is now available in a virtual edition that is compatible with VMware virtual environments.

VMware disses bare-metal desktop hypervisors

Security Gateway Virtual Edition (VE) has all the functionality of Check Point's Security Gateway and supports most of the security software blades that are available for the software when it is deployed on physical devices, the company says.

The platform supports firewall, VPN and intrusion-prevention software as well as other security packages from Check Point.The virtualized platform will support two new software blades scheduled for release by the end of the year – a data-loss prevention blade and an application-control blade, the company says.

The virtual product is available only for VMware virtual environments, not those by other vendors such as Microsoft or Citrix. But Check Point says it is open to working with other vendors when there is a business case for doing so.

The virtual version can be managed from the same platform as the physical version of Security Gateway.

The firewall, VPN and IPS functionality integrates with VMware's VMSafe APIs so the Check Point applications have direct access to data flowing through the VMware hypervisor.

The anti-virus and anti-spam software blades cannot support VMSafe yet, but Check Point says it is working on that.

Security Gateway VE is available at the end of September and costs $2,000 for firewall software with a license that supports deployment on up to eight physical cores. Pricing goes up from there. For example, support for 16 cores costs $3,000. Individual software blades such as IPS or anti-virus.
