Optus offers Trafficview real-time road conditions service

Optus has begun delivering real-time traffic conditions information using live data collected from the Optus mobile network.

The service, Trafficview, analyses a combination of Optus 2G and 3G mobile data, assessing the speed at which a customer moves over time and then compares this information to road networks.

According to Optus, this is facilitated using a technology called Cellular Floating Vehicle Data (CFVD) to generate traffic information by anonymously processing vehicle data information from the Optus mobile network.

With the Trafficview service, Optus mobile customers can access traffic maps, alternative travel routes and sign up for SMS traffic incident alerts in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The telco is luring in new users for the service with a free 14 day trial. There after, customers can access the service for a $3.99 per month fee, which includes up to 1,000 SMS alerts. A pay per alter service is also on offer.
