Google improves App Engine SDK

App Engine upgrade boasts features for improved performance, monitoring, and maintenance

Google on Thursday began offering an upgrade to its Google App Engine SDK with features for improved performance, monitoring, and maintenance.

App Engine is Google's cloud application deployment platform, which works with both the Java and Python languages. Version 1.3.8 of the SDK is now available but some features only work with Python at this juncture.

"This release includes a new page in the Admin Console, called the Instances page," the App Engine Team said in a blog post. "This page allows you to view information about all server instances currently in use by your application. This information can be useful in debugging your application and also understanding its performance characteristics. There's no configuration needed for this feature."

Also featured in the upgrade are Task Queue capabilities, including an increased queue configuration size and and a "Run Now" button for running a task immediately.

For Python applications, built-in handlers make it possible to add standard functionality in an application without needing additional code. This capability will be enabled for Java applications in an upcoming release.

An experimental addition to the admin console offers a UI for deleting entities, for Python applications. And a Python pre-compilation feature, announced in version 1.3.5, is now turned on for all application uploads using the 1.3.8 SDK by default.
