GPS monitoring and tracking for criminals pledged

Criminals under supervision and high risk defendants on bail would be subject to GPS monitoring under a Victorian coalition government.

Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu announced a $5 million plan to upgrade electronic monitoring bracelets to GPS technology.

The system would be introduced over four years and apply to convicted criminals under supervision orders, including sex offenders and arsonists, as well as borderline bail applicants.

Mr Baillieu said the current system was vulnerable to failure and GPS monitoring was used successfully in other states, including NSW.

"We think it's important to make electronic monitoring accurate, reliable and comprehensive," Mr Baillieu told reporters."
