University of Melbourne awarded $4 million linkage grant

The University of Melbourne and NEC have been awarded a $4 million linkage grant from the Australian Research Council (ARC).

The grant will create a collaborative effort between the two organisations, and is aimed at decreasing data rates for mobile devices and deliver broadband to remote locations that are unable to be serviced by fibre optic coverage.

A University of Melbourne professor, Jamie Evans, said the research will focus on developing cloud computing with a focus on internet-based services.

“The research will also make inroads into defining cloud computing technology – internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand,” he said. “…[It will also] provide a commercial alternative to Gigabit data access where optical fibre installation is prohibitively expensive or impractical.”

The research grant comes as the University of Melbourne’s Whitley College, a managed residential facility for students, earlier this year implemented an open source content management system.
