A European-wide project to improve interoperability of storage in the cloud could make the way that data is held and manipulated much easier.
The Vision project, which is sponsored by the European Union, is being supported by many of the leading players in IT including France Telecom, IBM Israel, Telefonica, Siemens, Italian TV company RAI, SAP, Orange and Telenor.
According to Daniel Sazbon, board member of the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA), one of the other organisations behind the initiative, there are several factors driving the initiative, mainly hinging on the way that data can be stored across different media and moved between different cloud providers, while conforming to open standards. He said that some of these factors included the use of an object data model, computational storage and content-centric access,
Sazbon said that the project, which started earlier this year and is scheduled to end in 2013, would help improve storage in the cloud for different types of company, such as telcos, health companies and media firms. "The user case that is being developed, for example, is that it can be accessible for different devices, accessed from different devices," he said.
He added that Vision was the most significant data storage in the cloud initiative. Sazbon explained followed in the footsteps of an earlier EU project, Reservoir, but Vision was more comprehensive.
