Dymocks taps Android for e-book, tablet move

The Acer Iconia A500 Android tablet
National book retailer Dymocks has partnered with Acer to offer Android-powered tablets as a vehicle for e-book sales along with a new Android app.
Dymocks first ventured into the digital book market in 2007 with dedicated kiosks in its stores, but the move to a software-based model with Android opens the company’s delivery channels to the wider mobile device market.
The company will also sell the new Acer Iconia A500 Honeycomb Android tablet in selected stores around Australia and online.
The launch of Dymocks eBook App for Android allows consumers to buy, download and read eBook content on any Android device.
Dymocks CEO, Don Grover, said the new digital and tablet offering is the next stage in the evolution to continually adapt and meet customer demand for their books and services across all channels of distribution.
“Dymocks has sold books for over 130 years and has always been at the forefront of offering customers choice and flexibility to enhance reading and book-buying experiences,” Grover said.
In an interview last year Grover said Dymocks was looking to support multiple devices for eBooks and its Android app realises that vision.
The app supports the EPUB format and PDF e-books bought from Dymocks.com.au.
“With over 200,000 e-books on the Dymocks website, our customers will be able to utilise the latest technology from Acer and Google to enjoy books in new and exciting ways,” Grover said.
The “Dymocks ebooks” app is a 3.77MB download from the Android Market and allows e-books to be purchased with credit card, Dymocks gift vouchers, Booklover rewards points and Acer eGift vouchers.
The apps uses Adobe DRM so people need to register an Adobe ID to be able to read the content.
Buying the book redirects the app to a website designed for mobile devices.
One commenter on the Android Market wrote: “Bookstore not optimised for mobile [and] expensive compared to others.”
As a sweetener for its new Acer Iconia tablet sales business, Dymocks will give customers a $100 Acer eGift voucher with every purchase of the Iconia A500 “for a limited time”.
Dymocks will sell the Acer Iconia A500 tablet with 16GB of storage space for $579.

I purchased an Acer Iconia A500 tablet but so far Dymocks online will not recognise my eGift Voucher and have received no acknowledgement from Dymocks even though I have sent several emails to them advising of the problem. $100 voucher is not much good if you can't use it.
