Horde 4.0 open source groupware, webmail suites released

After more than two years of development to Horde open source project has released version 4.0 of its integrated groupware and webmail suites.

Back in April the project announced version 4 of the groupware components, but a further two months of development was done to prepare the integrated groupware suite, which also includes a Webmail Edition.

According to the developers, a lot of work has been put into modernising the code libraries and the complete application stack. New interfaces for modern browsers and smartphones have been added.

Core changes include a new Ajax Calendar interface, simplified installation and reduced dependencies on external libraries.

The Groupware and Webmail suites are integrated from individual Horde applications, however, additional components can be added as required. Some 90 applications and modules are in the Horde ecosystem - from session management to integration with third-party Web services.

Horde release manager Jan Schneider said the 4.0 Groupware and Webmail Editions have "finally been released".

"Horde Groupware is a free, enterprise ready, browser based collaboration suite. Users can manage and share calendars, contacts, tasks and notes with the standards compliant components from the Horde project," Schneider said.

Horde Groupware features include public and shared resources (calendars, address books, tasks and notes), customisable portal with applet support, 25 themes, synchronisation with mobile phones (ActiveSync) and PC clients, integrated user management and support for most databases.

Developed in PHP, Horde can be run on any platform and the Web interface is browser-agnostic.

The Horde Groupware Webmail Edition bundles the Web-based e-mail application (IMP) in addition to the other groupware components.

IMP supports IMAP and POP3, message filtering and searching, HTML messages, spell checking, encryption, mailbox quotas, keyboard navigation and conversation view.
