NextDC unveils more Melbourne M1 details

Melbourne-based data centre provider, NextDC's (ASX:NXT) strategy to be the country's largest operator has come one step closer with the unveiling of more details about its tier three M1 facility set to be completed in November 2011.

The Port Melbourne site was selected in July 2010 at a cost of $15 million.

NextDC chief executive, Bevan Slattery, said in a statement that the 17,000 square metre building would include 6000 metres of IT space and 8000 metres of plant area.

"Each hall is a separate concrete bunker and is able to be Australian Security Intelligence Organisation [ASIO] T4 protective security rated if big customers require more [protection]," Slattery said.

"Expect Telstra, Optus/UeComm, PIPE, Primus, AAPT and Vocus fibre from day one."

According to NextDC's website, the data centre was designed to address the "growing appetite" for energy efficiency and neutral facility.

The website includes a mock up of what the lobby of the new data centre may look like on completion.

In March 2011, the company's investor report cited Perth, Canberra and Auckland, New Zealand as other potential markets for new data centres while a site called S2 in North Sydney was acquired in April.
