Call to buy Australian online this Xmas

Australian shoppers searching the internet for Christmas gifts this year have been urged to look for locally made and grown products.

The Australian Made campaign says with the economy going through a tough period, it was more important than ever for consumers to support companies and websites that marketed locally-made goods.

"It's a very delicate time for the Australian economy," chief executive, Ian Harrison, told AAP on Wednesday.

"It's a very competitive economy at the moment and we're losing a lot of our exports because of the high dollar.

"Imports are becoming far more competitive, so it's a good idea to buy Australian."

Harrison said looking for the Australian made logo on websites ensured products were safe, high-quality and also provided jobs across a wide range of industries.

"This Christmas we're encouraging Australians to look out for the many great gift ideas which use the Australian made logo both online and in traditional retail outlets," he said.

Recently South Australian Attorney-General, John Rau, also warned of the dangers associated with buying products through websites based overseas where Australia's consumer laws had no effect.

He said those laws, which included the right of a refund for a defective product, should serve as a significant incentive for people to shop locally this Christmas.

Harrison agreed, saying they were powerful reasons to buy in Australia and to buy Australian products.

"If you buy online from somewhere else you are far more susceptible to issues relating to warranties, return of products and faulty workmanship," he said.

"The company may or may not be a real company if you have to pursue a real problem."
