Next round of 'meaningful use' rules for eHealth records expected Thursday

Stage two of the rules to require health information sharing

The second of three sets of rules healthcare providers must adhere to in order to achieve the U.S. government's standards for meaningful use of electronic medical records (EMRs) is set to be published Thursday, according to reports.

According to Healthcare IT news , Farzad Mostashari, head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), announced at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) 2012 conference in Las Vegas today plans to publish the requirements online. The deadline for meeting those requirements is expected to be the end of 2013 .

During a presentation at HIMSS, ONC officials provided limited insight into what the regulations would entail; their comments did not stray far from what had already been expected.

One of the most prominent aspects of stage 2 of meaningful use will be the ability to share medical data among healthcare providers through health information exchanges (HIEs).

As with stage one of meaningful use requirements , the proposed rules for stage two will be subject to a 60-day public review period prior to being published in the Federal Register.
