Software glitch halts insurance, medicare claims

Software problems have prevented HICAP customers from making private health fund and Medicare claims on Wednesday

Thousands of customers have been prevented from making immediate private health insurance claims and Medicare transactions because of a computer glitch.

Customers were unable to use the Health Industry Claims and Payments Service (HICAPS), owned by National Australia Bank, on Wednesday because of software faults.

HICAPS asked customers to claim directly through their health funds or Medicare, while it worked to fix the problem.

The news follows glitches at the Commonwealth Bank earlier in the day, which caused ATM and EFTPOS services to crash across the country.

HICAPS provides payment and settlement systems to about 35 health funds and almost 28,000 health service providers, the company's website said.
