Data centre and telecommunications provider, Pacnet, has started the second phase of expansion at its Sydney CloudSpace1 (SYCS1) data centre as part of its long-term strategy to be the third largest data centre operator in Asia Pacific by 2019.
Up to 700 racks and 3 megawatts (MW) of power will be added to the Tier III facility in Liverpool Street, Sydney by December 2012. The facility, which was opened in February 2011, has 41,700 square feet of space.

The company operates four CloudSpace data centres based in Sydney (SYCS1), Hong Kong (HKCS1 and 2) and Singapore (SGCS1) which are part of its network of 23 facilities across Asia-Pacific.
Pacnet chief executive, Bill Barney, said that it will announce two locations in the Asia-Pacific region for it to build more CloudSpace facilities this year.
Barney has previously stated that the company wants to be the third largest data centre provider in the region by 2019.
He told Computerworld Australia last year that the telco didn't own any data centre infrastructure until late 2010 when it opened facilities in Hong Kong and Singapore. Pacnet is currently the eighth largest data centre operator in the Asia-Pacific region.
In other news, the company appointed Nigel Stitt as its Australia and New Zealand chief executive in May.
Stitt has worked at Pacnet for eight years, most recently as national sales director. He replaced former ANZ chief executive, Deborah Homewood, who has left the telecommunications and technology sector.
