Up to 5000 homes and businesses will be switched onto the National Broadband Network (NBN) around Cairns from mid next year.
The Aurukun Shire Council, Cairns Regional Council, Cook Shire Council, Tablelands Regional Council and Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council areas will connect to the NBN through fixed wireless.
Fibre deployment is scheduled to begin shortly in Cairns.
For businesses and homes outside the fibre and fixed wireless zones, NBN connection will be via satellite.
NBN Co recently announced 14 local government areas in South West Victoria will be connected to the NBN via fixed wireless, which will provide wholesale internet service providers with speeds of up to 12Mbps.
Around 17,000 homes in Northern New South Wales, the Hunter and the southern part of Darling Downs in Queensland will also be connected to the NBN via wireless.
