Geeveston, Tas. to house satellite ground station

A satellite ground station will be built at Geeveston, Tasmania to help deliver the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The ground station will be an essential transmission facility to deliver the NBN to premises around Tasmania, including Port Davey, Strathgordon and Cradle Mountain, with the location chosen after consultation with Huon Valley Council and NBN Co.

Construction of the satellite ground station is scheduled to begin early next year and to be operational by 2015 and will include two 13.5m diameter satellite dishes.

NBN Co is constructing 10 satellite ground stations around Australia and is part of the NBN’s Long Term Satellite Service, which will provide the NBN at speeds of up to 12Mbps.

“The NBN satellite service is designed to bridge the divide between the city and the bush and ensure all Australians can receive fast broadband,” said Matt Dawson, NBN Co’s program director, satellites.

“The site at Castle Forbes Bay near Geeveston is ideally located for this purpose. It is also close to reliable power and other infrastructure including the NBN’s core fibre transit network – the main fibre transmission lines linking towns and our exchanges.”

A development application for the ground station still has to pass planning approval and will include community consultation.

NBN Co recently announced two other sites for satellite ground stations, including Bourke and Wolumla, near Merimbula on the South Coast of NSW.

An Interim Satellite Service is currently providing the NBN in some areas, with speeds up to 6/1Mbps.
