Nexus 7 Android tablet to cost $319 in Australia

The Google Nexus 7, manufactured by ASUS, will be on sale later this month

The first tablet to run version 4.1 of Google's Android mobile platform — Jelly Bean — will launch later this month in Australia, retailing for $319 in stores including Harvey Norman, JB Hi Fi, Dick Smith, Bing Lee, The Good Guys, Officeworks and EB Games.

The Nexus 7, manufactured by ASUS, is a seven inch quad-core launched at Google's I/O developer conference.

The tablet uses an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU and includes 16GB of internal storage. In the US a cheaper 8GB version is also available.

The touchscreen display has a resolution of 1280x800, and according to ASUS the tablet's battery will last up to 9.5 hours.

The Nexus 7 includes Wi-Fi connectivity, but can't directly access 3G or 4G mobile networks.

Analysts believe that the Nexus 7 will eat into sales of Amazon's seven-inch Android-based Kindle Fire tablet, but is won't be an iPad killer.

Why is it so hard to get an Android tablet with both 3G and wi-fi? If they ever really want to go up against Apple then you need to offer people the choice. A Google of android 4 3g wifi gives SFA useable results, there's a Youtube video showing how to use a USB dongle but you know what, who really wants that sticking out the side of their tablet ready to be broken off or worse yet knocked upwards/downwards so the USB port gets damaged?

@Mike, the price of $319 is the same as what the google play store offers ($299 + $20 for postage). The $249 price in the US does not include sales tax or postage so the price would end up being similar.

When I use my tablet outside wifi I tether from the phone. Why would I have a separate sim, contract, etc. Generally I have wifi available so I don't need a sim. I will get a Nexus 7 once it becomes available and even if it had 3 or 4G I would not buy that model. Less to worry about and carry around.
