Optus has completed a $10 million, two-year mobile network upgrade across Greater Darwin and Palmerston in the Northern Territory, improving 3G access in the region.
Optus said its customers with dual band devices will have access to increased network capacity and greater accessibility to more 3G mobile sites in metropolitan areas in the region that utilise 900 MHz spectrum.
The telco is now also offering postpaid mobile broadband plans in the Top End for the first time as a result of the upgrade.
As part of the upgrade, Optus built 20 new mobile sites across the Greater Darwin and Palmerston areas, including in the Darwin River and Wagait Beach areas, which have received mobile coverage for the first time.
Optus has also upgraded nearly 30 existing mobile sites in the Greater Darwin and Palmerston areas to HSPA+ technology. In Darwin and Palmerston metro areas, the telco’s customers will also be able to access 3G coverage on the 900MHz spectrum at more than 30 mobile sites.
The telco told Computerworld Australia typical speeds over its 3G mobile broadband network range between 500kbps and 5Mbps, depending on traffic.
Optus is upgrading more than 1000 3G mobile sites using its 900MHz spectrum, enhancing the telco’s 3G offering in Darwin, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Optus also announced in September last year it was reallocating half of its 900MHz spectrum from 2G to 3G to improve the carrier’s indoor coverage.
