Amazon Thursday issued media invitations to a Sept. 6 event that is widely believed to be a Kindle Fire tablet announcement.
Speculation has been strong that Amazon will introduce a 10-inch Kindle Fire and update its 7-inch Android-based model. Other thinking is that Amazon will roll out a front-lit Kindle e-reader, to combat Barnes & Noble's Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, and maybe even a phone.

The Santa Monica press event will take place roughly a year after Amazon launched the original $200 Kindle Fire, which got off to a hot start last holiday season but has since cooled off. About 5 million Kindle Fire tablets have been sold, according to industry estimates.
The announcement is one of several intriguing ones slated for next month, with Motorola and Verizon expected to announce the Droid Razr HD on Sept. 5 and Microsoft/Nokia showing off Windows 8 Lumia phones that same day. Apple too is expected to make a big September splash with the iPhone 5 or whatever its next smartphone will be called, along with possibly an iPad Mini with a 7.85-inch screen (versus the regular iPad's 9.7-inch screen).
