Watch out Amazon, Apple: Toys R Us jumps into tablet market

Amazon has its new Kindles. Rumors have it that Apple may have a new iPad Mini. And now Toys R Us is getting into the tablet game, too.

The company has released Tabeo, a 7-inch multi-touch screen 4GB, Wi-Fi-enabled tablet running on the Jelly Bean version of Android software. It comes pre-loaded with more than 50 apps, including games such as Angry Birds and Cut the Rope. Toys R Us also will have an app store with more than 7000 other options, it says, ranging from free apps, books and educational materials.

The tablet is not the first aimed at the younger generation of technologists. There are a variety of other tablets for kids, ranging from a low-end Fisher Price iXL, a $US59, 3.5-inch book reader, game player and notepad, running on four AA batteries, all the way up to the $US279 Motorola Xoom Family Edition, which includes pre-loaded apps for the little ones. VTech has its InnoTab2 with a 5-inch screen for $US79, aimed at 3- to 9-year-olds as well.

Toys R Us expects the Tabeo to be released this fall. The move represents an effort by the toy store to embrace increasingly technology-based products, as evidence by the 33 tablets it sells on its website.
