A.org to to be auctioned by Go Daddy

Organisations seeking a shorter address, take note: one- and two-character .org domain names will soon go up for auction.

Go Daddy and Public Interest Registry plan to auction 42 such domains in a 10-day auction for pre-approved parties. The auction date has not been announced, but it’s expected to be in the “coming months,” Go Daddy said. Interested parties can start the pre-approval process today.

The 42 available domains, listed on the Go Daddy website, include a.org, z.org and 3p.org.

"Companies want a short, snappy domain name, and these dot-ORG names are what you could call the 'cream of the crop,'" Go Daddy director of domain name after-markets, Paul Nicks, said in a statement.

The auctioneers said they expect high bids for the domains. They quoted the previous sale of DIY.org for $60,000 and Poker.org for $1 million. Public Interest Registry is a non-profit and plans to forward its share of the proceeds to open development and Internet security programs.
