Telstra has restored Internet and data services for 91 large business customers in southwest Victoria after a fire took out part of the telco’s exchange in Warrnambool.
The businesses included “a number of banks, medical, utility, government and transport customers,” Telstra said.
Mobile service is back up for more than 80 per cent of the impacted area, Telstra said. The telco has also restored service to payphones, 250 medical priority assistance customers, essential services, and more than 450 other priority lines including for retirement homes and schools using two mobile exchanges on wheels.
Telstra has sent a third mobile exchange to Warrnambool and is expected to arrive early tomorrow morning, with all communications now restored for the township of Balmoral, it said.
Telstra has been working to restore service since the fire hit on Thursday morning. Telstra has 50 technicians on site making repairs, working across two 12-hour shifts.
“Today technicians remain focused on restoring transmission cabling and replacing equipment which carries landline telephone services,” Telstra said. “Work will also be undertaken to restore coverage to customers in a number of townships by re-routing services through other exchanges.”
