This morning in Las Vegas, at re:Invent, Amazons inaugural partner and user conference for its AWS (Amazon Web Services) juggernaut, the company unveiled a new set of big data warehouse and business intelligence services collectively known as Redshift.
Andy Jassy, Senior Vice President of Amazon Web Services, discussed the high cost of on-premises big data warehouses and business intelligence solutions currently on the market, which puts them firmly out of reach for smaller businesses. Redshift provides a new entry point.

Amazon Redshift promises to easily and rapidly analyze petabytes of data at one-tenth the cost of traditional data warehouses, while maintaining compatibility with popular business intelligence tools from IBM Cognos, SAP Business Objects, Microstrategy, and Jaspersoft. The latter has already announced that its cloud-based analytics platform works with Redshift.
Customers will be able to choose from options of 16TB local disk with 128GB of RAM or 2TB local disk with 16GB of RAM. The solution can be configured up to 100 nodes for up to 1.6PB.The cost is expected to weigh in at only $1,000 per terabyte per year, versus an estimated cost of $19,000 to $25,000 per terabyte per year for an on-premises solutions, as estimated by the analyst firm ITG in June 2011. Redshift is expected to be generally available in early 2013.
