Kogan launches cheap Android handset

Australian online discount retailer Kogan has taken the wraps of an Android smartphone, launching the Kogan Agora: A handset with a five-inch screen retailing for $149.

The Kogan Agora runs Ice Cream Sandwich: Version 4.0 of Google's mobile platform. It will work on all three of Australia's networks (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone).

The five-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 480x800 and runs a dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 processor, which is accompanied by 512MB of RAM. The phone has 4GB of internal storage and a microSD slot.

Kogan had originally planned to offer an Android phone in 2009, which would have been the second phone on the market running the operating system. However, the planned handset never went to market.

The company recently began reselling mobile access on Telstra's wholesale 3G network as a mobile virtual network operator.

The new Kogan Android phone comes with a free Kogan Mobile SIM Starter Pack, which includes a SIM card.
