NT bus interchanges get free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi access points will be available for commuters at bus interchanges in Darwin and the suburbs of Palmerston and Casuarina in the Northern Territory under a program to begin in mid-February.

The program, announced by Territory transport minister Adam Giles, will be installed and operated by Easyweb Digital. Setup and operation will cost the government $60,000 in the first year and $21,000 for every subsequent year.

Wi-Fi access will be restricted, with a media statement issued by Giles indicating that commuters are likely to be limited to 90 minutes of Internet access per day.

“The growing use of smartphones, tablets and iPads are an everyday reality for many Territorians and I am keen to consider other projects like Wi-Fi at interchanges to enhance the services we provide with the public bus network,” Giles said in a statement.

Giles said that program would provide direction for future deployments of free Wi-Fi services.
