Optus is shipping extra mobile handsets, SIMs and wireless modems to flood-ravaged areas of Queensland due to increased demand in the region due to flooding.
Optus is the shipping extra products to its Far North and Central Queensland Optus stores, focusing on Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone, Gympie and Maryborough.
All Optus stores in the state are open, except Bundaberg Central, Queen Street Mall in Brisbane and the Fortitude Valley store.
The extra shipments will begin arriving today and tomorrow.
Optus issued a statement today indicating that the telco's mobile network is operational in “major population centres” in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
However, a Twitter post made after the statement was issued said that there were a limited number of mobile outages across Central and South East Queensland regions “due to power and transmission failures”.
Over the weekend Telstra services were progressively being restored across Central and Northern Queensland after fibre was damaged at Colosseum.
Telstra issued a statement this morning stating: "While the outages resulting from the cable-cut have now been rectified, some services continue to be affected by localised power outages caused by storms. These disruptions will be fixed as power is restored, or we are able to arrange emergency power."
