Telstra, New South Wales announce tech training for seniors

Telstra and the New South Wales government have announced a broadband adoption effort targeting seniors.

The Tech Savvy Seniors program will provide free or low-cost technology training to seniors at libraries and community colleges. Through face-to-face training and self-teaching video, the program will teach seniors how to use computers, tablets and smartphones.

The program, part of the NSW Ageing Strategy, is aimed at bridging a digital divide between seniors who use technology and those who do not.

“Developing the confidence and skills to use technology and participate in the digital community and economy is increasingly important for seniors,” said NSW minister for ageing, Andrew Constance.

Seniors can use broadband to stay in touch with family, shop online, bank and pay bills, said Telstra chief customer officer, Gordon Ballantyne. The program will have a “particular focus on regional and rural areas,” he said.
