NBN to enable online applications for construction of buildings in South Perth

NBN distribution hub also announced for Western Australia

Communications minister Anthony Albanese has announced an upcoming online application system for the construction of buildings in South Perth that the National Broadband Network will enable.

The online lodgement and tracking system employs high-definition videoconferencing to connect applicants with council staff, eliminating the need for applicants to travel to the council offices.

The city will receive a $214,000 grant for the project under the Labor government’s digital local government program. The city itself has contributed about $87,000.

"This project will see the City of South Perth's approvals speed up with planning officers being able to work online with very complex drawings, maps, and plans instead of using a cumbersome paper-based system," said Kevin Trent, deputy mayor of the City of South Perth.

Albanese also announced a new NBN distribution hub that is under construction in Bentley, Western Australia.

The NBN hub in Bentley will employ 20 permanent staff and will deliver fibre to more than 44,000 homes and businesses in Perth’s south, Albanese said.

The government plans to finish the exchange by September.
