Stay Smart Online week kicks off

Theme covers small business and individual’s online information security

Stay Smart Online week begins today with a focus on increasing online security awareness for small businesses.

This year’s theme is `Your business is your business.’

The initiative is running a short online survey to see what cyber safety practices people have in place to protect their business.

“I am pleased to support this initiative which reminds us all about online safety and security” said NSW Privacy Commissioner, Doctor Elizabeth Coombs.

“The Stay Smart Online message is for everyone. Many of the things we do online involve us giving out personal and financial information so it is important that we know how to protect it. I urge everybody to only deal with trusted and reliable businesses/sellers online and to always use a secure payment method,” she said.

The annual week is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Communications and the Arts.

Email, Internet and phone-based scams cost Australians $45 million in 2015 according to a half year report released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in July.

The top five scams by losses were dating and romance scams ($10 million), investment schemes ($9.1 million), inheritance scams ($3.5 million) Nigerian scams ($2.3 million) and betting schemes ($1.3 million).
