Stories about: SAS

  • eBay may offer BI-as-a-service to companies

eBay, which runs a gigantic data warehouse for internal business intelligence (BI) analytics, is considering taking it outside its firewall and offering it as a Web service to interested companies.
  • Network Instruments' GigaStor network data recorder

Network Instruments data recorder holds 288T bytes

Network Instruments has developed what it claims is the largest network data recorder available. The GigaStor SAS has a capacity of up to 288 terabytes, and was originally developed for a U.S. military customer which needed to store a month's worth of the traffic on its network, said Douglas Smith, the company's president and co-founder.
  • Jitterbit reveals open-source data integration tool

Data-integration vendor Jitterbit released the 2.0 version of its platform on Monday, adding another entry to a growing group of open-source alternatives to proprietary offerings from the likes of IBM, SAS and Informatica.
  • Three new Western Digital drives hit top speeds

Recently, Western Digital has come to market with three drives aimed at increasing the performance of both 2.5- and 3.5-in. drives: the Caviar Black, the Scorpio Black and the VelociRaptor. Nothing about them speaks to "green power." Rather, the "black" lineup is aimed at enthusiasts who want performance and let their power supplies be damned if they can't handle the load.
  • In a best-of-all-worlds scenario, the P5N-E SLI motherboard that I built my system around would have onboard graphics as well. It doesn't, but it will accommodate SLI. The six-channel sound and Gigabit LAN were what sold me.

Building a free computer from spare parts

Ah, the joy of summer storms. A recent one involving a flooded basement (a torrential downpour traveled down a chipmunk burrow that led to an otherwise enclosed basement window with a broken windowpane) and several staccato blackouts sent one of my neighbor's computers, as well as one of my own, to their eternal rest.
  • Tandberg Data releases rack-mounted NAS

Tandberg Data has announced it Viking FS-800U 2U NAS appliance that supports up to eight hard disks using SAS 3Gbps or SATA II connectivity.
  • Nexsan gets beastly with business data

Nexsan has introduced a storage subsystem which it said could enable users to consolidate their long-term business-critical data stores into a single consolidated platform.
  • Sun Storage J4200

Sun takes on data boom with expanded storage lineup

With many organizations scrambling to meet exploding demand for storage capacity without constantly expanding their IT staffs, Sun Microsystems continues to push open-source software as a solution, along with a new series of storage arrays and a hybrid server-storage platform.
  • The dangers of cloud computing

The idea of cloud computing -- designed around an architecture whose natural state is a shared pool outside the enterprise -- has gained momentum in recent months as a way to reduce cost and improve IT flexibility. But the use of cloud computing also carries with it security risks, including perils related to compliance, availability, and data integrity.
  • Cognos business intelligence software ported to System z

IBM's Cognos 8 BI (business intelligence) software is now generally available for System z mainframes running Linux, the company announced last week.
  • Dell delivers eco-friendly SAS server for SMBs

As the old saying goes, "When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail." For me, this means more than just seeing a storage angle everywhere I look. Lately, it also means seeing the environmental impact of every product I review.
