The Network Engineer is required to support the Institute's Local Area Network (LAN) and Wider Area Network (WAN) environment to ensure the availability of information systems for staff and students. The position operates under the general direction of the Infrastructure Coordinator.

Shared Services delivers customer support and infrastructure resources for the Institute’s internal and external customers. The objectives of the Shared Services department are to:
• create efficient integrated and standardised technology and facilities services
• improve the quality and speed of response to customers of those services • reduce operational risks arising from less than optimal solutions in skills and capacity
• realise operational productivity benefits from rationalised, shared delivery of support to systems users
• provide appropriate services via internal or external sources to optimize client service delivery.

Shared Services incorporates the ICT team , Facilities and Child Care Centre (Kids On Campus).

The ICT Department is a diverse group of 12 staff lead by the ICT Team Leader who provide access to the Institute’s information systems for staff and students. This includes network infrastructure, telephone communications, computer software/hardware, and ICT Helpdesk Services.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Infrastructure Coordinator

Supervises: Nil

Lateral: Systems Engineer, Network Administrator The Institute operates through a collaborative, team based, networked structure. Resource Delegation nil

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS (KRAs)
1. Maintain excellence in customer service, a respectful and inclusive attitude to diversity, and commitment to continuous learning and improvement, to support Wodonga TAFE’s strategic growth and development.
2. Configure and manage Local Area Network (LAN) environments including switching, cabling and maintaining associated infrastructure to ensure the availability of network connectivity.
3. Configure and manage Wider Area Network (WAN) environments including router setup, carrier interfaces and capacity planning for the Institute's growth to ensure access to information services for staff and students.
4. Maintain Disaster Recovery sites and Business Continuity measures within the ICT environment to facilitate a highly available network. This includes periodic testing of the ICT Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP).
5. Manage and maintain the Institutes physical ICT environments including Server room (including air conditioning), electronic security key and fire protection systems, Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) and diesel generator to ensure the security and protection of the Institute's data.
6. Maintain the storage area network including management of the physical devices (including disks and chassis) and the provisioning of storage to operating systems to ensure the fulfillment of data requirements.
7. Manage the Institute's firewall environment, both internal and external, to ensure adequate protection from security threats are in place.
8. Configure and manage the Institute’s remote access infrastructure to allow staff and students secure acccess to information over the Internet.
9. Manage carrier services including fault resolution, monitoring and reporting on performance of Service Level Agreements (SLA), and recommending new services or replacement of existing services to guarantee highly available voice and communication services for staff and students.

10. Configure and maintain voice and data communication platforms including email systems, and VoIP phone systems to ensure effective communication between network users.
Note: The incumbent can be expected to be allocated duties not specifically mentioned in this document, but within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level. Specific performance targets will be negotiated as part of the Institute’s regular performance planning and review process.

ACCOUNTABILITY & AUTHORITY

This is a service position that is responsible for providing access to information services. The incumbent will be required to maintain a highly available Network Infrastructure and deliver this service to all Institute staff and students.

The position has primary responsibility and accountability for maintaining the LAN switching environment, specifically management of VLAN's , trunking, stacking, and security.

The position is accountable for providing a secure and highly available WAN environment, including firewall devices, rules, interfaces and DMZ.

The incumbent is accountable for providing expert advice on Network Infrastructure to the Infrastructure Coordinator to enable them to make decisions on network design.

The incumbent is responsible for making decisions on break-fix issues including troubleshooting and changes to LAN and WAN environments.

Issues regarding major changes to hardware and software platforms, carrier services and security devices are undertaken after consultation with the positions supervisor.

Decisions on budget and outsoucing are refered to and made by the Team Leader ICT.

This position is frequently required to analyse a variety of alternatives for problems that may recur. Work demands the conceptualisation, identification and development of ideas, the detailed analysis of alternatives courses of action and their implications, devising action plans and advancing new approaches.

Problem resolution occurs within the existing professional knowledge and experience.
