Bookseller Barnes & Noble is considering spinning off its Nook digital business to help it grow, following strong growth in sales of the Nook reader and tablet and digital content in the nine-week holiday period ending Dec. 31.

Tablet sales at 18.1 million units during the third quarter were somewhat lower than expected, but stronger-than-expected demand during the rest of the year will give the market a boost, according to market research company IDC.

Amazon's Kindle Fire is expected to take nearly 14% of the global tablet market in the fourth quarter, placing it second behind Apple's iPad with its 65 per cent share, according to an analysis by market research firm IHS.

The $249 Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble costs $50 more than the Amazon Kindle Fire and has about double the storage and memory. But there's also something else about the Nook that caught the eye of teardown experts at iFixit: A metal loop at the lower left corner of the metal cover.
