Android phone users have been warned to check app permissions after it was found that some popular apps upload mobile numbers to third-party entities without notification.

An innovative new type of mobile advertising is being used to funnel money to support hunger relief efforts. Dubbed GetCharitable, the new Android app replaces the background image on a phone with a periodically updated ad, revenue from which is then directed to an international anti-famine group -- offering users a way to help combat famine for free.

Google's Android operating system, native to T-Mobile's G1 and myTouch smartphones and due out soon in a number of new phones and even netbooks, is an impressively open and versatile platform. As with rival smartphone platforms -- Apple's iPhone OS, RIM's BlackBerry OS and Palm's new WebOS -- the out-of-the-box features offered by Android are just a starting point.
