Promoting its own alternative language to JavaScript, Google is working to bridge JavaScript to Google Dart, with the release Monday of a mapping application that the company is calling its JavaScript to Dart Synonym app.

Google last month launched a Web programming language called Dart intended to address the shortcomings of JavaScript, and some have even called it a JavaScript killer. Accommodating large programs and team-based development, Dart is object-oriented and uses a virtual machine. InfoWorld recently interviewed Lars Bak, the lead software engineer for Dart, to better understand Google's intentions for the new language.

Although slipping slightly in usage from a year ago, Java has still held steady as the most popular programming language in Tiobe Software's monthly index on which languages are holding the most traction with developers.
