Hospital prescribes SaaS asset management

Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) is using locally developed asset management software to perform a mobile audit during its $700 million redevelopment project.

The Loc8 solution from Sydney-based vendor Smartpath was chosen by RNSH to assist it in determining which assets remain and which assets are to be replaced, as well as provide data for the proposed redevelopment.

Smartpath's software-as-a-service Loc8 mobile solution running on PDAs is being used to barcode each asset and record information like asset location, estimated life, department, and condition.

Smartpath and RNSH staff have visited some 50 buildings on the RNSH campus located north of Sydney, with around 7000 rooms, to categorize and tag what was originally estimated to be 250,000 assets - ranging from beds to research and medical equipment.

Despite recent criticism over the level of care it provides, RNSH is being redeveloped in one of the largest health capital works projects in NSW and will replace about 50 small buildings with a purpose-built hospital and facilities for community health.

Smartpath managing director David Hodges said too often organizations don't have an accurate idea of what assets they have, let alone where they might be or the condition they are in.

"This is a serious financial and compliance blind spot," Hodges said. "Fixed assets represent a significant portion of an organization's annual capital expenditure and balance sheet value, so we believe it's prudent to conduct at least an annual snapshot or complete asset audits to keep unnecessary operating expenditure to a minimum."

The results of the audit were made available to RNSH and the proposed redevelopment consortia via Smartpath's Web-based asset management solution, Loc8, for the duration of the project.

RNSH will now manage its assets on an ongoing basis and provide the information to third-party project suppliers.

"[RNSH] has showed it is committed to innovation by taking up our software-as-a-service offering and it shows the industry how the on-demand wave has moved beyond CRM applications," Hodges said.

Smartpath co-founder and technical director Owen Batt said software as a service needs to be desktop-like and has ditched Ajax in favour of Adobe's Flex development environment for creating a similar experience over the Web.
