Extreme Networks releases 'pay-as-you-grow' switch

Same operating system across switching capacity

Extreme Networks has announced the Summit X650, a 24-port, non-blocking, 10Gb switch.

The 1RU Summit X650 claims to be "future-proof" in that it allows enterprises to upgrade to 10Gb Ethernet while protecting existing investments in gigabit technologies for switches and servers.

Up to 32 10Gb ports are supported on a single system, with up to 256 ports in a stacked system.

The total throughput performance is 512Gbps and it supports SFP+ fibre interfaces.

The Summit X650 runs the Linux-based ExtremeXOS operating system which is also found in Extreme Networks core, aggregation and edge switches.

"ExtremeXOS provides high availability and extensibility with its open architecture and simplicity with a single consistent foundation throughout the network," according to the company.

The Extreme Networks Summit X650 is available from Avnet beginning at $A21,000.
