University engineers building 'eye' camera

The eye-shaped camera captures images on a curved surface, promising sharper, less-distorted images - as well as applications in the nascent bionics field.

A team of US engineers are developing a camera based on the shape of the human eye.

The camera, which is being co-developed by the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, is also the same size as a human eye. It records images on a curved surface rather than the straight surface conventional cameras use.

To achieve this the camera uses a mesh of wires. It can produce sharper images with less distortion than those produced by a conventional camera.

The researchers believe the curved-surface technology could be used in the development of a bionic eye once the technology becomes available.
