After two years of development, the Australian version of the Mac and PC retail point-of-sale (POS) software BrighterShop is now available to local retailers.
BrighterShop Au is the result of a collaboration between US developer Rob Costin of BrighterData and Mark Richards of Sydney-based Ambrite to customize the POS application for Australian retail regulatory and market conditions.
"While researching available software for an Australian retail establishment I found no software that offered an attractive and intuitive user interface and complete feature set,” Richards said. "BrighterShop was ideal, but designed for the US market. The results of our customization mean that we have an ideal product for this market niche."
BrighterShop Au is built on FileMaker Pro 9, which allows it to run a shop with a Mac or Windows computer and support for multiple systems over a network or the Internet.
Key features of the application include multiple exchange rates, purchase order and inventory control, barcode and scanner support, ability to handle Items incorporating multiple components, store credit and gift certificates, customer sales tracking, and reporting.
BrighterShop Au is licensed per store location, not per computer it runs on, and costs $2695, including one year of software upgrades.
A single licence can be run on unlimited computers and the optional annual upgrade subscription is $340 after the first year.
BrighterData’s Costin said the Australian market provided some development challenges, like GST handling, lay-bys and multiple currencies.
Sydney-based specialty gift store Lost My Way has been using BrighterShop for more than 18 months to do point-of-sale, purchasing, inventory control and management reporting and to maintain the shop's online store.
Lost My Way director Sarah Palmer said the company has suppliers all over the world working in different currencies.
“BrighterShop has proven to be fast, effective and professional when handling purchasing, selling at the checkout, inventory control and customer tracking," Palmer said. "The ease and completeness of reporting means that as a business owner I always know how we are tracking. I also love the ability to directly access the system from any remote office, so I don't have to be in the shop to see how sales are going."
