Free photo manager digiKam reaches 0.10.0 release for KDE4 and Windows

After months of development and hundreds of bug fixes, the open source photo manager digiKam has reached a significant milestone with the 0.10.0 final release for KDE4 and Windows.

DigiKam is a photo management application similar to Apple iPhoto or Google's Picasa that imports photos from a digital camera and makes them available for presentation and manipulation.

The older 0.9.x series was started in the KDE3 paradigm.

Features include automatic organisation and transformation of photos, image tagging and metadata support, a native image editor, and a plug-in interface for third-party applications like exporting photos to Flickr.

Lead developer Gilles Caulier announced the release and changelog today.

Version 0.10.0 adds XMP support, native Windows support, small screen usability improvements, a new camera capture tool, and new search tools.

As evidenced by the Windows port, digiKam has eliminated its dependencies on X and can therefore be ported to Mac OS X.

The digiKam source code can be downloaded from SourceForge.net. Expect Linux distribution packages to follow soon.
